Diwali, or Deepavali, is the festival of light, and for many families fireworks are as much a part of the evening as the diyas on the doorstep. In 2026, the main night falls on Sunday 8 November, just three days after Bonfire Night, which makes it one of the busiest weeks of the year for anyone who works with fireworks.
We have been supplying fireworks from our Chelmsford showroom for over 20 years, for back gardens and professional displays alike. The thing we have learned about Diwali is that the best displays are rarely the biggest. They are the ones planned around the evening itself: the puja, the meal, the family.
In this guide, we’ll cover when to start your display, the colours that suit Diwali, how to build a running order, how to set up on the night, and the curfew times you need to know. This is the advice we would give you if you came into the showroom and asked.
Quick Answer
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. In England and Wales, you can set off fireworks until 1 am on Diwali night (6 pm to 1 am in Scotland). For a garden display, plan around 10 to 15 minutes of fireworks: fountains and wheels to open, a cake to carry the middle and a gold finale, with low-noise options if neighbours or pets are nearby.
When should your Diwali display start?
Before you choose a single firework, work out where the display sits in your night. Lakshmi Puja is usually performed in the evening after sunset, and in early November it is properly dark by around 5 pm, so there is no need to wait until late to start (in Scotland, fireworks cannot be set off before 6 pm).
Most families we speak to settle into the same rhythm: prayers first, then food, then everyone out into the garden. Plan for that, and you avoid the two most common problems we hear about: fireworks rushed in between courses, or a display that starts so late the youngest guests have already gone to bed.
As a rule of thumb, 10 to 15 minutes of fireworks feels like a full display in a garden. Every product page lists its duration, so add those up as you plan, and allow a minute or two between pieces for lighting.
Which colours suit a Diwali display?
There is no single official colour code for Diwali, and meanings vary between regions and families, but a few colours come up again and again.
| Colour |
What it is often associated with
|
Where it works best in your display
|
|---|---|---|
| Gold | Wealth, prosperity and divine light, and Lakshmi herself | The centrepiece and the finale |
| Orange | Warmth and enthusiasm, and for some, purity | A warm opener |
| Red | Strength, energy and auspicious beginnings | Accents between the gold moments |
| Green | Growth, peace and new beginnings | Lifting the middle of the show |
Blue, purple and pink are less traditional, but they work well as supporting colours if you want more variety.
One thing worth knowing from our experience: “gold” on a label can mean very different things in the sky. A gold glitter crackles and shimmers, a gold willow hangs and drifts slowly down, and a brocade leaves heavy, glowing trails. They all suit Diwali, but they feel very different. Every firework we sell has been tested by our team and has a video on its product page, so watch a few before you decide. It is the quickest way to find the gold that matches the mood you want.
TOP TIP: Watch the product videos with the sound on. It is the easiest way to check how loud each gold effect is before it goes in your basket.
Blue is also the hardest colour for manufacturers to get really strong, so expect blue effects to read a little softer than the golds and reds around them. How should you build your running order?
A good garden display has a shape to it. We think of it in three parts.
The opener: low and bright
Start at ground level with fountains and Catherine wheels. A fountain sends up a column of golden sparks that looks beautiful against a garden lit with diyas, and a wheel gives the children something to watch closely, from a safe distance. Our Diwali Fountain by Brothers Pyrotechnics, new for 2026, was made for exactly this moment.
Stand fountains on firm, flat ground, and fix wheels exactly as the instructions on the box describe. Keep diyas, candles and any other open flames well clear of where you are lighting.
The middle: let a cake carry it
Once everyone is settled, bring in a cake, also called a barrage. You light it once, and it fires its whole sequence on its own, which means whoever is lighting gets to step back and actually watch it too. On a lawn, set it on a flat board and weigh it down or stake it, following the instructions on the box, so it cannot tip as the ground softens.
The finale: finish on gold
Save your biggest piece for last, and make it gold if you can. A slow gold willow or a heavy brocade finale is the image people take home with them. If you would rather not choose piece by piece, a selection box gives you a balanced mix that covers the whole evening.
How do you set up on the night?
Most of what makes a display run smoothly happens before the first fuse is lit. These are the habits we would recommend to anyone:
- Use the light: Set up while there is still some light, so you can see your ground and spacing properly.
- Check the wind: Check the wind direction and put your audience upwind of the fireworks.
- Keep them boxed: Keep fireworks in their box until the moment you need each one.
- One lighter: Choose one responsible adult to do the lighting, and give them a portfire or lighting puck and a torch.
- Read every label: Read the label on every firework and follow its safety distance and instructions.
- Never go back: If a firework fails to go off, follow the instructions on its label and do not go back to it.
- Sparklers: Supervise children with sparklers and keep a bucket of water nearby for used ones.

Being a good neighbour on a Sunday night
Diwali falls on a Sunday this year, and plenty of neighbours will have work or school in the morning. A quick word a day or two before goes a long way, and it gives anyone with pets the chance to prepare.
If you are in a built-up street, or there are young children, grandparents or pets in the mix, our low noise range is worth a look. Low noise fireworks still give you colour and sequences, with crackles, whistles and softer pops in place of loud bangs. The range includes cakes, Roman candles, fountains and Catherine wheels, so you can build a whole display around it.
What time do Diwali fireworks have to finish?
In England and Wales, you must not set off fireworks between 11 pm and 7 am, with a few exceptions. Diwali is one of them.
| Night |
Latest time you can set off fireworks
|
|---|---|
| Bonfire Night, Thursday 5 November 2026 | Midnight |
| Diwali, Sunday 8 November 2026 | 1 am (into Monday 9 November) |
| Any other night of the year | 11 pm |
In Scotland, the rules are slightly different. Fireworks can only be set off between 6 pm and 11 pm, extended to 1 am on the night of Diwali and to midnight on 5 November.
Wherever you are, it is against the law to set off fireworks, including sparklers, in the street or other public places, so keep your display in your own garden. Rules can also vary locally, so check with your local council if you are unsure what applies where you live. You must be 18 or over to buy fireworks.
When can you buy fireworks for Diwali?
For general sale, registered sellers can sell fireworks between 15 October and 10 November, and for three days before Diwali. This year Diwali sits inside that window, so most shops will be selling. In years when Diwali falls outside it, that three-day rule becomes important.
We hold a year-round licence, so our range is available whenever you need it. What we would say, from experience, is that this year’s timing matters more than the rules. With Bonfire Night and Diwali in the same week, couriers and stock are under the most pressure they face all year. Delivery to the mainland UK takes as little as 1 to 2 days, but ordering a week or so ahead gives you time to unpack, check everything and plan your running order without rushing.

If you would rather see the fireworks in person, our Chelmsford showroom is open Monday to Friday 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 4 pm, and click and collect lets you choose a time that suits you. If you live in Scotland, Scottish rules on sale times and quantities apply to your order.
The bottom line
A memorable Diwali display comes down to planning around the evening: know when the puja and meal will finish, choose colours that mean something to your family, give the night a clear opening, middle and gold finish, and set up properly while it is still light. Do that, and even a modest selection will feel like the centrepiece of the celebration. If you would like help putting a display together, our team is happy to talk it through, in the showroom or on the phone.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How many fireworks do I need for a garden Diwali display?
It is easier to plan by time than by number. Around 10 to 15 minutes of fireworks feels like a full display in most gardens. Add up the durations listed on each product page, allow a minute or two between pieces for lighting, and you will know quickly whether you need more or less.
Are low noise fireworks a smaller show?
No. Low noise describes the sound, not the size of the display. You still get colour, sequences and variety, from cakes and Roman candles to fountains and Catherine wheels, just with crackles, whistles and softer pops in place of loud bangs.
I am buying for both Bonfire Night and Diwali. Can I do it in one order?
Yes, and with the two dates three days apart this year, one order is the simplest option. Order a week or so ahead, then keep the fireworks in their original packaging somewhere cool, dry and out of reach of children and pets until you need them. There are legal limits on how much you can store at home, so check our UK firework law guide before placing a larger order.
What if it rains on Diwali night?
Keep your fireworks boxed and covered until the moment you light each one, as damp is the biggest enemy of a good display. If any get soaked, set them aside and give us a call for advice rather than trying to use them.
Does the 1 am curfew cover every night of the Diwali festival?
The 1 am extension applies to the night of Diwali, which in 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. On the other nights of the five-day festival, the usual 11 pm cut-off applies, so plan any celebrations on those nights to finish earlier.
