How to Become a Pyrotechnician in the UK

Becoming a pyrotechnician in the UK is an exciting and rewarding career choice for those passionate about fireworks and committed to public safety.

With strict regulations and safety measures in place, this career requires dedication, training, and a keen understanding of the technical and artistic sides of pyrotechnics.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to becoming a pyrotechnician, from understanding classifications to getting hands-on experience at one of our training experience days.

What is a Pyrotechnician?

A pyrotechnician is a professional who safely handles and operates fireworks and other explosive materials. They are trained to ensure safety when setting up and lighting fireworks for displays.

Pyrotechnician’s work with various types of fireworks, from small displays to large shows at public events.

Their responsibilities include testing firing equipment, setting up firing sequences, and ensuring all safety regulations are followed throughout the display.

They must also remain calm under pressure and be aware of their surroundings.

Understand Fireworks: Classifications & Categories

In order to become a pyrotechnician, it’s essential to understand the different types of fireworks and how they are classified.

In the UK, fireworks are classified into four main categories under the CE classification system.

This system follows strict safety standards across the European Economic Area (EEA), ensuring that fireworks meet the required health, safety and environmental standards.

These categories are based on their level of risk, intended use, and performance.

Understanding these categories is key for pyrotechnician as each type of firework has its own handling and safety rules.

Read more about the regulation of fireworks in the UK.

F1 fireworks are low-risk and safe for indoor use or confined spaces. They are the least powerful and create minimal noise. Examples include sparklers and small novelty items such as fun snaps.

F2 fireworks are slightly more powerful and are intended for outdoor use in larger spaces. They are commonly used for private garden displays. Examples of fireworks in this category include small rockets, cake barrages, Roman candles and fountain fireworks.

F3 fireworks are classified as high-hazard fireworks. Typically, F3 fireworks are intended for use in professional displays and public events. Examples of fireworks under the F3 category include large rockets, multi-shot cakes, mines and large Roman candles.

F4 fireworks are the most powerful available to purchase; these are for professional use only and are used in major events such as New Year celebrations, concerts and sporting events. Large multi-shot cakes would fall under this category.

Retail vs Professional Fireworks

Fireworks are generally split into two main categories: retail and professional.

Retail fireworks include F1, F2 and small F3 types. These fireworks can be brought in stores by individuals aged 18+.

Professional grade fireworks, usually F3 and F4, are much more powerful, and these can only be used by trained professionals at events. You also need a special license to buy and use them.

Why does understanding firework classifications matter for training?

For anyone wanting to pursue a career as a pyrotechnician, knowing the difference between F1, F2, F3 and F4 fireworks is essential for understanding the specific handling, storage and safety requirements for each type.

While F1 and F2 fireworks are available to the public, more powerful F3 and F4 types can only be managed safely by trained professionals with the proper qualifications.
