How to Keep Safe around Fireworks: Gear, Tips and Best Practices

Fireworks are fun to watch, lighting up the sky with bright colours, but they can also be dangerous.

Without the right safety measures, fireworks can cause accidents, injuries, or property damage. That’s why it’s important to know how to stay safe when using them.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know, from the essential safety gear you should have on hand to practical tips and best practices to ensure your fireworks celebrations remain fun and accident-free.

Essential Firework Safety Gear

Before lighting any fireworks, it’s important to have the right safety gear to keep yourself protected against accidents and injuries.

Here’s a list of important safety items you should choose:

  • Safety glasses: To protect your eyes from smoke, sparks and debris that can fly off when fireworks are lit.
  • Fire-resistant gloves: Wearing fire-resistant gloves will protect your hands from burns while handling or lighting fireworks
  • Ear protection: Fireworks can be loud, which can harm your hearing. Using earplugs or earmuffs helps to reduce the noise and protect your ears.
  • Protective clothing: Choose clothes made from natural fibres such as cotton and wool. These materials are safer because they don’t catch fire as easily as synthetic fabrics, which can melt and cause burns.
  • Closed-toe shoes: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes protect your feet from hot sparks, debris or falling firework parts. Always avoid sandals or open shoes when near fireworks.

Additional safety equipment to have on hand:

  • Bucket of water: Keep a bucket of water nearby to quickly put out any small fires or soak used fireworks before disposal.
  • Fire extinguisher: Ensure you have a fire extinguisher to put out large fires that a bucket of water can’t handle
  • First Aid Kit: Accidents can happen, so having a first aid kit nearby lets you treat minor burns, cuts or injuries quickly and effectively.

Having these safety items ready before you start your firework display can make all the difference in keeping the experience safe and fun for everyone.

Firework Safety Tips

Now that you’ve got the right safety gear, it’s just as important to follow some key safety rules when using fireworks.

Below are the most important firework safety tips to follow before, during, and after your display.

1. Read the Instructions First
Before lighting any fireworks, always take the time to read the instructions on the packaging. Different types of fireworks will have different features and work differently, so following the manufacturer’s guidelines helps to ensure you are safe.

2. Light One at a Time and Step Back
Only light one firework at a time and move back immediately after lighting it. This keeps you at a safe distance in case something goes wrong.

3. Never Relight a Dud Fireworks
A firework that doesn’t fire is called a dud, and it should be treated with caution. Never attempt to relight a firework that didn’t go off. Instead, wait at least 20 minutes and soak it thoroughly in water to prevent any delayed ignition.

4. Keep Children and Pets Safe
Set up a secure, designated viewing area for your fireworks display. Keep little ones well back from the launch area and ensure pets are safely indoors to reduce anxiety.

5. Buy Fireworks from Reputable Sellers
Only use fireworks that are marked with a CE or UKCA to ensure they meet UK safety regulations. Do not buy fireworks without any labels.

Best Practices for Safe Firework Use

With the right safety gear and essential firework tips covered, here are some additional best practices to keep your celebration safe and enjoyable.

  • Set up your firework launch area in an open, clear space away from buildings, trees and any flammable material.
  • Have a designated lighting area separate from where the audience stands.
  • Check the weather forecast and avoid lighting fireworks on windy days.
  • Plan your firework display time, waiting until it’s fully dark for better visibility.
  • If setting up a garden display, inform neighbours in advance.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption when handling fireworks to stay alert.

What to Do in Case of Emergency

Even with all the right precautions, accidents can sometimes happen. Knowing what to do in an emergency can help you respond quickly and keep injuries to a minimum.

If someone gets burned or injured, it’s essential that you immediately cool burns with running water and use basic first aid for cuts or scrapes. For more serious injuries, call emergency services right away.

To help you feel prepared, we’ve written a detailed blog all about how to handle fireworks emergencies safely. It covers everything from basic first aid to when to call for professional help.

Enjoy Fireworks Responsibly and Safely

Fireworks bring joy and excitement, but safety must always come first.

By using the right protective gear, following essential safety tips, and knowing what to do in an emergency, you can enjoy your fireworks display with peace of mind.

Remember, preparation and caution are key to preventing accidents and injuries.
