Can You Set Off Fireworks Remotely?

Planning a firework display, but don’t want to stand right next to fuses? A remote fireworks ignition kit could be exactly what you’re looking for.

Whether it’s for safety concerns or you just want to take your firework display up a notch this year, remote ignition technology allows you to launch fireworks from a distance at the push of a button. It’s safer, more precise, and adds a professional touch to any show.

In this blog, we’ll explain what remote fireworks ignition is, how it works, the safety benefits, and what you need to get started with your own setup.

What Is Remote Fireworks Ignition?

A remote fireworks ignition system allows you to set off fireworks without physically lighting the fuse. Instead, you use an electronic controller or ignition kit to ignite the fireworks instantly and safely from a distance.

Remote firing systems usually include the following components:

  • Controller: The handheld device or mobile app that sends the signal to ignite and launch the fireworks.
  • Firing modules: These are the devices connected to each fireworks that receive the signal and ignite them.
  • Wiring: Connects the firing model to the controller. Can be wired or wireless.
  • Igniters: Available in different lengths, like 24 or 6 metres. These electronic igniters connect to the firework fuses.
  • Visco fuse: Sometimes used to provide a controlled delay between ignition and the firework effect.
  • Channel firing system: Allows control of multiple fireworks simultaneously (often with 6 or 18 channels).
  • Cue visualiser: A tool that shows you which fireworks will fire next, helping you time your display precisely.

How Does Remote Ignition Work?

Remote ignition systems use a handheld controller or mobile app to send an electronic signal to the firing modules that are connected to your fireworks.

Step-by-Step Firing Process

  1. Set up your fireworks: Find a safe spot for each firework and make sure it’s placed securely and pointed away from people and property.
  2. Attach the igniters: Connect the electronic igniters to the fuse of each firework.
  3. Connect to the firing module: Connect each of the igniters to the firing module, which lets you control when each firework goes off.
  4. Link the firing module to the controller: This connection can be made with wires or wirelessly, depending on your system.
  5. Move to a safe distance: Step back to a secure area far enough away from the fireworks.
  6. Press to fire: Press the button on the handheld controller or mobile app. This sends an electronic signal to the firing module, which ignites the fireworks instantly and safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set off fireworks from a distance?

Yes. Remote ignition systems allow you to ignite fireworks from a safe distance without lighting fuses by hand. They’re a great option for improving safety and achieving more precise timing.

Always make sure your remote firing system is designed for consumer fireworks (Category 2 or 3), and manufacturer’s instructions and the safety distances printed on each firework’s label. Remote ignition still requires careful setup and supervision.

How far can you set off fireworks remotely?

It depends on the firing system. Most with allow you to ignite fireworks from 50 to 300 metres away, while some professional wireless systems can operate at distances of up to 800 metres or more in ideal conditions.

The actual range can vary depending on terrain, signal strength, weather, and whether there are obstacles such as buildings or trees between the controller and the firing module.

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific firing system, and remember that day. You must still keep to the least spectator and ensure everyone stays well clear of the fallout area.

Are remote ignition kits safe?

Yes. When used correctly and in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, remote ignition systems are safer than lighting fireworks by hand. They allow you to ignite fireworks from a distance, keeping you well away from sparks, misfires, and debris.

However, remote firing kits must still be set up carefully and used only with consumer fireworks (Category 2 or 3). Always check that your system carries the appropriate UKCA, and follow all setup and distance guidelines.

Do I need a license to use a remote ignition system?

In the UK you do not usually need a licence to use a remote firing system with Category 2 (garden) or Category 3 (display) fireworks, provided you use them on private land with the landowner’s permission and follow all safety rules. Category 4 fireworks are for professionals only.

You will need licensing or formal permission in these cases:

  • You are using Category 4 fireworks. These are restricted to professional operators.
    GOV.UK
  • You are storing more than the exempt amount of fireworks at home or for an event. As a rule of thumb, up to 5 kg NEC can usually be kept without a storage licence. Above 5 kg NEC and up to 2,000 kg NEC requires a storage licence from the local authority. More than 2,000 kg NEC is licensed by the HSE. Always check the exact limits and conditions where you are.

It is sensible to check with your local council or fire authority for any local restrictions on use, noise, or display times.
