Happy Birthday To Us!

This year, 2026, is 20 YEARS since Firework Crazy came about. It all started through a love of fireworks and my wife is partly to blame.

We got together in the last half of 2005 and I decided a bonfire night party (which I always held) would be a great opportunity for all our friends to meet. This was a big occasion, I had to impress, it had to be my best display yet! I spent HOURS trawling the internet to find the best fireworks but I became increasingly frustrated at the lack of information and videos for each product. I’d visit a website and there would be a name of a product and that was about it! You’d be lucky if you got a photo and it told you how many shots it had! I wanted to know what it did, how it fired, how big the tubes were, etc etc. This information was very thin on the ground. I thought ‘this could be so much better.’

How It All Started

And so the following year, 2006, Firework Crazy was born. Initially with £8000 worth of stock from Panda Fireworks and a concession in a garden centre. I built the website (yes, all by myself) Below is the first snapshot of the website from 15th May 2007 – it had already been live for a few months.  This was also the year we took our first steps into displays, and would you believe it – winning our first competition! (check out my write up here) What really comes to light when you look at the old website and the products is that prices have remained very stable over the last 20 years. A pint of beer was £2.40 in 2006, a small pack of 4 rockets was £5, we still sell a small pack of rockets for £5. You’d be lucky to find a pint for £2.40 that’s for sure.

Delivering fireworks

In the same year I managed to get a contract with NightFreight to do our deliveries.  That was no mean feat, others had been trying for years without success and I later found out it was because I was prepared to “do things properly; paperwork, cartons, labelling.” NightFreight are no more, but we still do things properly when it comes to delivering our customers’ fireworks. All our own drivers are ADR trained and we use a specialist courier for deliveries further afield.

Finding Our Home In Chelmsford

We stayed at the garden center for a couple of years and would have probably stayed longer. It was a great space with plenty of storage, but the owners decided to sell to developers which left us looking for a new location. We took the plunge in early 2008 and signed a six year lease on what is now our offices, Unit 21, Eckersley Road, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 1SL.

This became our shop, office, warehouse and distribution. It was a huge leap of faith and commitment, but it ultimately paid off. This space is now our office, in fact I’m sitting writing this at my desk under that window at the end!

We soon outgrew this space as our showroom and shop and several years later the unit next door (Unit 22) became available. We took another leap of faith, taking on this unit as well and decided to convert it into our firework showroom / shop which it still is today. Around 2010/11 we started providing professional displays and in 2012 I took on my first member of staff, Phil, who’s still with me now as my Display Manager. He had already been firing displays with us and I offered him a part time role, promising him at least 16 hours a week. We joke that since the day he started he’s never actually done just a 16 hour week!

I honestly can’t believe that it’s been 20 YEARS! How many more we’ll have in this industry remains to be seen. It’s been an amazing double decade full of great experiences and making many friends in both staff and loyal customers.  Yes, our customers! We wouldn’t be here without you; some come and go but we have some that have been with us from the beginning.  We thank each and every one of you. Our ethos has always been to treat our customers the way that we would like to be treated, to be listened to, looked after and made to feel special regardless of whether you’re buying a £10 selection box or a £1000 display pack. I suppose that’s why we’ve created this great offer for each of you, whether you’re an existing customer or new. Everyone gets to have a Birthday Cake with us!
