frequently asked questions

• What are roman candle fireworks?

Roman candles are a type of firework that fire a series of coloured stars, comets and effects one at a time from a single tube. They are available in a wide range of sizes and shot counts, from single shot tubes to powerful multi-shot candles with up to 100 shots.

• What is the difference between a 1.3g and 1.4g roman candle?

1.3g roman candles are professional-grade fireworks with larger powder weights, bigger effects and greater heights — typically requiring a 25-metre safety distance. 1.4g roman candles are consumer-grade, generally smaller in size and effect, and require a minimum 8-metre safety distance, making them suitable for most gardens.

• How far do roman candles shoot?

This depends on the size and classification of the candle. Our 1.4g roman candles typically reach heights of between 15 and 25 metres, while our 1.3g candles can reach up to 40 metres.

• Can I use roman candles in my garden?

Yes — most of our 1.4g roman candles are suitable for garden use, requiring a minimum safety distance of just 8 metres. If your garden is smaller than this, our low noise fireworks range includes quieter, shorter-range options that may be more suitable.

• Are there quiet roman candles available?

Yes — our low noise fireworks range includes roman candles that produce great visual effects with significantly reduced noise, making them ideal for residential areas, nervous pets or displays near young children.

• How do I use roman candles safely?

Always read the instructions on each product before use. Place the candle upright in firm ground or a suitable holder, ensure the tube is pointing towards the sky, and stand well back after lighting. Never hold a roman candle in your hand, never return to a lit candle, and always keep a bucket of water nearby. Visit our firework safety guide for full guidance.

• Can I combine roman candles with other fireworks?

Absolutely — roman candles work brilliantly alongside cakes and barrages, fountains and sparklers to create a varied and well-rounded display. Many experienced display builders use roman candles to fill the gaps between larger fireworks.

• How many roman candles do I need for a display?

This depends on the length and scale of your display. For a short garden show, 4 to 6 candles alongside a couple of cakes is usually sufficient. For a longer display, our shot tube packs give you the best value and allow you to create sustained sections of colour and effect.
